What better way is there for an active group of inner-city youth to
spend a summer than learning how to grow flowers and vegetables, market
the produce, become good neighbors, and refurbish a neglected city lot?
Full Duck got the assignment to capture the youths' journey through
this process and their success. The energy and enthusiasm of the youth,
narrated by one lively pair and peppered with youth activities and
comments, helped the video win a Merit award in the Society for
Technical Communication International Video Competition, 1999.
Challenge: Document a summer 4-H Young Entrepreneur Garden Program of the Colorado State University Denver Cooperative Extension. The program trained inner-city youngsters to become better citizens of their neighborhood and learn teamwork, gardening and marketing skills. Show program supporters, neighborhood leaders, produce purchasers, CSU administrators and future program donors the success and accomplishments of the youth in the program.
Solution: Full Duck Productions followed teachers, coaches and inner-city youth for one summer throughout significant steps in their learning, neighborhood contact and marketing efforts. Full Duck wrote a script using two youth narrators who told the story and illustrated it with words and images of other youth in the program. The video won a Merit Award from the Society of Technical Communication (STC) International Technical Video Competition.
